My Review
INFINITE NIGHT is the dramatic conclusion to this high fantasy series where a girl finds she is more than she believed and has a destiny that will shape the future of her world. Full of friendships, family, loss, danger, war, and romance all set in an immersive fantasy world. Fantasy fans may enjoy this one.
I fell in love with this fantasy world when I read the first book, Born at Dawn. I also enjoyed book two and have been looking forward to this concluding book for some time. The fantasy world is unique and well-drawn making for an immersive experience. I liked all the different factions, the internal politics, and the different races. I especially loved the friendships and found family. I think Mari, Astiand and Emiliand were my favorite characters from this third book, although they're not always prevalent in the story. Neva was pretty frustrating for most of the book, but eventually she redeems herself.
The story moved at a steady pace with plenty of drama and action. There was romance, but it didn't completely overtake the story and there were spans of time where there was no romance at all, which I appreciated. The story held my interest as I wanted to know how things would end and who would be left standing when it got there. There were some pretty good edge-of-your-seat parts as well as other parts of connection and laughter. A lot happens in this book, especially during the second half. Neva and her friends have a lot of work to do to win the war externally and internally they face.
I'm not exactly sure what happened by the time the characters arrive in this third book. I loved the first book in this series because the heroine, Neva, is this fierce, street smart, likable character and the fantasy world is amazing. I felt some of that fade in the second book and then in this one she's pretty much a whiny, sniveling mess who is avoiding her destiny and the future before her. She brings those around her down as well and complains about her worthlessness and the consequences throughout. She also pushes most of her friends or comrades away. There also wasn't much to the plot and story the first half. It was honestly rather annoying and frustrating. I felt like it wasn't consistent to her character in book one or the overall plot. Instead of developing into her own it felt like she majorly digressed and the story right along with her. Having said that, the last 40 percent of the book does start to get better. Thank goodness. There are a few other plot points and actions of other characters that also don't work for me. I don't particulary care for love trianges and this is more like several of those or maybe a couple of rectangles. There was so much drama and jealousy and some trying to hurt others by controlling those they care for. However, my biggest complaint was the first half of this book with Neva's actions and character development.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I had high expectations for this series conclusion that weren't met, but I did enjoy the second half of the book and finding out how things end. It's an amazing fantasy world.
