My Review
THE REFORMER was a coming-of-age story about a girl who thinks she has fallen in love at first sight and finds that love and life are more complicated than she ever imagined. Throw in an avid imagination, being sequestered for most of her life, a controlling father and aunt, and a country at turmoil trying to reform the government and laws, and you have quite a story. With all that, it was well balanced with fabulous characters and a slowly-building romance. An enjoyable story with little surprises and tension that continually made things interesting. Would definitely recommend to historical romance readers.
I loved that the heroine, Mary, begins this story as a naive, hopeless girl, and ends it as a woman who has evolved over several months. She understands that her hopes and dreams have changed, that she has changed. That was probably my favorite aspect of this story. Well, except maybe for one of the men and the way he becomes a friend and then possibly something more. The last scene was very swoon-worthy and heartbreakingly sweet. I also loved Mary's neighbor, who I didn't recognize as Miss Pearl for a long time (it's like I forgot about her as being the Matchmaker because she was so well woven into the story).
I thought it was interesting to read a story set during England's political struggles of the time. The only other romance I've read that is even close to this time period would be North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell (a dear favorite book of mine), but this was much more involved in a lot of ways being set in London. The heroine gets some first-hand knowledge of the struggle and plays a unique role in things as well, especially for a woman for the time period. It cast a unique twist on the story.
In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes! This was a little more sensual in parts than the other books in this series, but so many aspects of this story brought out all the feels. I loved the characters (even when I was frustrated with them) and loved the story!
