My Review
NEVER HIRE A HERO is a sweet story about a retired soldier who is trying to find his place and a woman who is trying to fully step into her role as the head of her castle and household after her husband's death. There is a mischievous cat and three delightful children who enhance the story, a slightly villainous cousin to add some tension, and of course plenty of romance. Sweet romance readers should enjoy this one!
I honestly enjoyed these characters and found them delightful. The kids especially added so much to the story and constantly made me smile and laugh with their dialogue and antics. I also found Thea very relatable as she tried to be the mother she hoped to be and struggled with knowing if her decisions are the right ones. She was trying to figure things out and find her way as she was managing the estate and her family on her own. Roth was somewhat lost at the start of this story as well. He had been a soldier for so long and then becomes a tutor for Thea's boys. He had to fight his attraction to her that only grows the more he got to know her. The romance slowly builds from attraction and admiration to love, with a bit of danger and adventure thrown in.
I would have liked some more development in the story. There were places with some fairly trite phrases and others that were overly sweet. I would have liked more depth in the characters and for things to feel more genuine overall.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable story and sweet from beginning to end. This would be an ideal read for those who are looking for something light and romantic to relax to.
