Summary

The adventure continues when Abby and Derick begin their second semester at Cragbridge Hall, the most prestigious secondary school in the world. But when Grandpa Cragbridge admits them to the Council of Keys—a secret group of people who have keys to travel back in time—strange things begin to happen. One by one, members are found unconscious and unable to wake, their keys stolen. Now Abby and Derick must scramble to figure out who is behind the attacks before they become the next victims, which would give their enemy the power to change the past forever.

A page-turning, time-travel adventure that teaches powerful lessons about choice and consequence, believing you can do hard things, and valuing history.

My Review

I really enjoyed this storybook world! I felt it was well-thought out. I also found it interesting how the author set up the classrooms and the school and the way in which they taught the students. Wouldn't it be cool to learn about an animal and then get to simulate what it feels to be that animal? Or how about a simulation where you're given materials to build a bridge and you have to use math and engineering skills to do it. I can see why my son loved this book so much.

Then you have this group of teachers, the MC's grandfather, and a group of four students all facing the evil villain, Muns. I think it is very plausible that if technology ever became this advanced and time travel was possible that you would automatically have individuals who would want to protect the past and future and those that would want that power for their own ends.

Things were a little cryptic in the beginning and I had to get used to Carol, Abby's friend, and her constant flood of words. After I got past those though, the story started to pick up. I wasn't sure who the accomplice was and who else would be targeted. I also wasn't sure what Muns overall plan was and how he would go about putting it into motion. The plot kept me guessing and it got more intense towards the end.

My son read both the first and this second book in the series over just a few days (in fact I practically had to steal the book back from him so I could read it). When he finished the first thing he said was: "Please tell me there is a third book!" I told him there was, but it wouldn't be out for a while. I enjoyed this book, but I think even more importantly, my son loved it and he is the targeted audience. I would definitely recommend The Avatar Battle to middle graders and others who enjoy this genre.
