(Wings of the Nightingale #3)
by Sarah Sundin
by Sarah Sundin
Summary
Bold, sophisticated, and flirtatious, Army Air Force flight nurse Lt. Kay Jobson collects hearts wherever she flies, leaving men pining in airfields all across Europe. So how can ruggedly handsome C-47 pilot Lt. Roger Cooper be all but immune to her considerable charms? In fact, he seems to do everything he can to avoid her.
Still, as they cross the skies between Italy and southern France, evacuating the wounded and delivering paratroopers and supplies, every beat of their hearts draws them closer to where they don’t want to go.
Can they confront the fears and misunderstandings in their pasts?
My Review
I have been planning on reading Sundin's Wings of the Nightingale series for some time. I was happy that even though I haven't read the first two books in this series, that this book stood on its own and I never felt confused or like I was missing information. I know that some of the characters would have been more like old friends instead of new ones if I'd read the other books, but it didn't affect this story for me.
In Perfect Time was perfectly set during WWII. I loved the slang, the atmosphere (not the war part of it), how these men and women in the armed forces lived with so little and worked so hard. Many of them enjoyed what they did even though they didn't like the war, or enjoyed what they did because they felt they were playing their part in the war. I got a taste of those that were much more removed from the war, for the most part, than other books I've read. They're on the outskirts taking away and caring for the injured, but not getting close to the real battle. They still have time to go out and dance and date. At the same time, they see the injured and the effects of the war and can't go home until it's over. They cheer on the allied forces and hope that they will break through the Nazis and end the death and destruction.
Some Christian fiction books lean too heavily towards the inspirational aspect sometimes and can feel preachy. In Perfect Time was full of beautiful inspirational moments, moments of internal battles, introspection, desire for grace, bitter hurt, and forgiveness. The characters who turned to God weren't always looked upon with kind eyes by those around them. I felt like Kay's and Roger's stories, at least the parts we see, were authentic and heartfelt. They were beautiful, made so by the contrast between the bitter things they had faced and the joy as those things were overcome.
I loved these characters! Kay grew on me a little, so I ended up liking her more as the story progressed. She wasn't in the best place when the story began. I could tell that she was putting up a front and that things were going to be difficult for her. I liked how she began opening herself up to Roger and how they develop a friendship. Then there was Roger who wanted to run the other way. I loved that he stopped and listened, that he was willing to reach out when Kay needed someone to be there for her. I loved his quiet strength and understanding and that he had his own struggles. He was perfectly imperfect. They both had a great group of friends. I liked the camaraderie and joking around, even the little pranks between the guys that cracked me up. There was also a part with some mules in the back of a cargo plane that made me a little nervous, but that I also couldn't help cracking up about.
The plot also intensified as the story went on. I got a little nervous about how things would end. I wasn't sure if Kay and Roger would be willing to open their hearts, to really let love and God in and what they would have to do to get to that point; what they would have to face; what they would have to learn.
In Perfect Time was a heartfelt and sweet story. The title fit it well as it just showed that there is a perfect time for some things, for hearts and minds to change, to people to meet at certain times when they can touch another's life. The romance was a part of the story, but there was so much more going on and I loved how each aspect of the story fit all together. If you enjoy reading Christian historical romance, then I would definitely recommend In Perfect Time! Now I need to go back and read the other books in this series.
Content: Clean (There is an attempted rape, some other innuendo, and some violence from the war, but I would consider this clean.)

Glad this turned out to not be too preachy and it worked for you. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI thik I'll participate because my TBR is gianormous. I'll be back with the link for the post. Awesome idea though : )
ReplyDeleteSince this fits in just perfectly with my September is for Sequels Challenge I will definitely join up as soon as I do a post. Probably tomorrow or maybe later tonight.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like my tbr always gets bigger as the year goes on and I always need a little push to get it back under control by this time of year. Glad you're going to join us!
ReplyDeleteFabulous, Lisa! Your challenge is perfect for me and I'm planning on reading a lot of sequels during this.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! You got this!
ReplyDeleteI have sequels I need to read too! I am working on Sinner right now. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a wonderful series. I know I always love to know how people manage during times of conflict.
ReplyDeleteHalf of those are sequels that I need to read myself! I am bad about reading sequels for several reasons, but I need to get better at that!
ReplyDeleteForget the sequels... I need to read most of the FIRST books in these series. ;) Ones I'm planning to eventually read are Jodie Meadows, Anna Banks and Kasie West. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteSorry I have been out of town for a week. I am going to use your page to remember the rules....are you going to be okay with me using your info, by quoting you?
ReplyDeleteLol! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI saw some mediocre reviews, so I'm hoping I'll like it. I hope you do too!
ReplyDeleteI like reading them all together instead of each book as it comes out, but I just can't always do that or want to when they're so tempting. :)
ReplyDeleteKasie West - So, so good!!! Jodie's and Anna's both just sucked me in.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks like an awesome challenge! I wish you the best of luck!
ReplyDeleteIt's one I definitely need to do so I can meet my goals for this year's Series Challenge.
ReplyDeleteIt was really good!
ReplyDeleteI do too. There are some beautiful stories that come out of hardship.
ReplyDeleteI want to join!! I'll be using Goodreads, so for "URL," do I just put my url for my Goodreads profile page?
ReplyDeleteYes. That will work. Glad to have you! :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds amazing and I'm totally participating. My post is up and I cannot wait for it to start. Thanks for organizing this! :)
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you're excited! It was really great last year and I'm really looking forward to it this year as well! :D
ReplyDeleteI can edit it, so I'll put it in. :) Thanks for joining!
ReplyDeleteOoh! I'm really in need of another read-a-thon to tackle my TBR while I still have time! I'll definitely be participating and will have my sign-up post up in the next few days! Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteYou're a doll, Tressa! Thanks!! :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteThe timing of this is perfect for me as I'm hoping to use the first two weeks the kids are back to catch up on all the reading and reviewing I just couldn't do when they were off for the summer.
ReplyDeleteYay! I joined! -laughs- I can't wait for this. But...I'll be at school, so I might not read as much as I want to...
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun. I have minimum goals right now, though I reserve the right to amend them before the 8th.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you'll be joining us! I've been getting some good reading in and I want to keep the momentum going, so I'm looking forward to it myself. :)
ReplyDeleteIt should be! :D
ReplyDeleteIsn't that the truth? The preparing for school and getting them off gets crazy, so I always just want to catch up on reading once school is in gear.
ReplyDeleteWell, there's no requirement for how much you read. You can have fun with some of the challenges/giveaways too. :)
ReplyDeleteLol! You definitely have time to amend them by then. =)
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how quickly the sequels start to stack up! I'm keeping my list small since it's going to be such a busy month but this challenge is great motivation for getting through those series! Happy Reading! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, at first I thought you were going to read all of those this month, and I was really impressed! But that is a great way to put all the different choices you have. Good luck, and I can't wait to see how you do! I just started my first sequel for the month today. Thanks again for signing up to participate!
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy! I might be lucky to get four read, so there's no way I'll even get through half of these. I would except that I have quite a few books I have to read for tours, so those take precedence. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI just forget about some sequels sometimes when I'm dealing with ARC's and tour books, so I wanted to think about which ones I should be reading. I requested a ton from the library, so hopefully I'll get to a lot of these.
ReplyDeleteI started Split Second and hope to have that done this week. As long as I get at least one read per week I'll meet the minimum, but I have so many to read that I'd really love to get twice that many. Thanks for hosting, Lisa!
Yay! Another read-a-thon. Work has been keeping me far to busy this year, so my TBR has grown. This will not only give me some motivation to trim the TBR pile down, but will encourage me to take a break from work and actually relax. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad! I'm planning on reading a lot!! :)
ReplyDeleteTotally think I should participate in this RaT! I have a huge TBR pile as well as a lot of Review Book requests right now. Awesome Idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! :) I can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteI do have one more question...I noticed that you have some restrictions for authors (family friendly), and I was just wondering if there were any restrictions for readers. Thanks!!
I'm so ready to get started!
ReplyDeleteNope. None for you guys. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a huge pile too and it seems to grow as the year progresses. I hope we both get lots of reading done!
ReplyDeleteMe too, Katie! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you Tressa!! :)
ReplyDeleteThe linky I posted for my sign-up post doesn't work... :(
ReplyDeleteIs there anyway I can modify the link or should I enter another one (I'm number 42)
Leave the link in reply to my response and I'll add it for you. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much :)
