Friday Favorites: Heart of the Ocean by Heather B. Moore

Friday Favorites is a weekly meme hosted here, that spotlights a favorite author, book, series, publisher, cover, blog, etc. Basically whatever bookish thing that you love, recommend, and want to tell others about. Just pick one and link up to my post each Friday to share. You can use the graphic I used above, the other one here, or your own.

I read this one for the Whitney Awards and I'm so glad I did. I don't know
that I would have picked it up so soon otherwise. I highly recommend it!
It's only $0.99 for Nook and Kindle, which is definitely worth it!

Summary

A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost . . . a handsome stranger . . . What more could Eliza Robinson want?

Except for maybe her life.

In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.

While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.

After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

My Review

I was happily surprised by Heart of the Ocean. I have read a few of Heather B. Moore's books, but the plot and feel of this book was very different from those. The things that didn't surprise me was the quality of the writing, the fully developed characters, and the plot that kept me engaged and guessing.

I can't adequately convey the Gothic and mysterious feeling of this story. It was a little creepy. I wasn't sure if it was going to turn into a ghost story or something else. The historical aspect was fabulous and interesting in and of itself. You could tell that the author did her research. Then there was the danger and suspense. I didn't know who was safe and who Eliza could trust. There was also some sub-plotting between other characters that brought quite a bit to the story.

Then there was the romance. It was perfect! I loved how there was attraction, tension, friendship, and then the possibility of something more. I loved the letters between the two MC's. I also loved how they interacted with each other.

I loved this story mostly because I fell in love with the Eliza and Jonathan. They both have their own struggles and I enjoyed seeing them face those and become stronger for doing so. They definitely don't meet under the best circumstances. However, they find that their perceptions of each other were widely wrong.

This was a wonderful historical Gothic tale. I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy suspense, ghost stories, historical settings, and romance!

About the Author

Heather B. Moore
Heather B. Moore is the USA Today bestseller and award-winning author of more than a dozen historical novels which are set in Ancient Arabia and Mesoamerica. She is not old and doesn’t remember the time period, so Google has become a great friend. Although she has spent several years living in the Middle East, she prefers to forget the smells. Heather writes her historicals and thrillers under the pen name H.B. Moore. She also writes women’s fiction, romance, and inspirational non-fiction under Heather B. Moore, including The Newport Ladies Book Club, the Amazon bestselling anthology series A Timeless Romance Anthology, the Aliso Creek series, and the USA Today bestseller Heart of the Ocean.

Heather graduated from Brigham Young University with a major in Fashion Merchandising and minor in Business Management–which has absolutely nothing to do with writing novels. But at least she can balance a mean checkbook and color-coordinate her kids’ school clothes.
