Weekly Update #324, I can't believe July is almost here...

Welcome to my Weekly Update where I post my blog's schedule for the week!

I don't know how the summer is already going so fast! My oldest starts back up in school in July and I am just not ready for it. I need a lot more downtime and playtime first. This last week we still had family in town and did some fun things with them, but now they've all gone back home and we're taking it easy the next week seeing a friend and family on the other side for Independence Day. Hopefully I'll get back on a regular schedule this week at the gym and with sleep, plus get some good reading in. 🙂 It's a bit of a lighter week coming up, which I haven't had in ages, so I'm going to enjoy it and hopefully have time to actually respond to comments and participate in Top Ten Tuesday (one of my favorite memes that I haven't joined in ages). Happy Fourth to all you Americans!

My Review

DANGER ON THE RANCH is an intense read as a mother tries to escape the clutches of her serial killer ex-husband with the help of his retired US Marshall brother. It's a story full of suspense, complex characters, and moments of faith.

Mitch and Jane find themselves in a dire situation and under some pretty tense circumstances as they fight for their lives and safety. I liked both of these main characters, and I liked the overall story. I thought there were quite a few red herrings and I actually would have liked a few of those to develop more, but with this line of books there isn't always time to do that. The inspirational element of the story is pretty strong, but it worked.

I had a tough time with the romance. It started early on in the story and I just didn't feel it. I think I would have actually liked the story a lot more without the romantic aspect or with it just blooming at the end. It just didn't work for me.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is definitely one of those cat and mouse stories. I had some issues with it, but I think there is promise for this new series.

We’re kicking off a new cowboy series, but this one is going to take you for a wild ride! Set on a ranch that’s sandwiched between the sea and the hills required me to do some on site research of course! I spent quite a while in this gorgeous area of California, looking for cattle. (You can see the zany results in my video.) I found the cattle, and also the perfect setting for this first book. About the Author

I’ve been writing and illustrating my own stories since the first grade, and I’ve been making comic books since middle school (no, really! Seventh grade was a tough year for me socially, so I had a lot of time to draw). I started my first book-length comic (graphic novel) in high school.

Unlike a lot of people who become professional artists and authors, I didn’t go to art school or a creative writing program in college. Instead, I mostly studied history, literature, philosophy, and French in the College of Letters at Wesleyan University. This means I have a brain full of weird facts, old books, strange art, and the extremely useful ability to read The Tales of Canterbury in the original Middle English. Except for the Middle English bit, it’s all come in very handy for writing and drawing historical fiction and fantasy.

I first started to get paid for making comics when I was still in college, when my first graphic novel was published online. After college, I worked as a graphic designer and visual communications consultant (which means “person who helps teach adults complicated stuff in cool new ways using pictures”). I’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies, global charities, technology companies, libraries, and a lot of other interesting organizations. I’ve made illustrations, animations, information graphics and cool presentations, explaining everything from how microchips work to the ways that clean drinking water can help communities in the third world.

For the last ten years, though, I mostly work as a writer, comic book creator and illustrator! Sometimes I make books totally by myself, and sometimes I get to team up with other writers or artists. It can be lots of fun, but it can also be very hard work. Luckily, I never get tired of making new stories.

My Review

SUMMER BY THE TIDES is a highly anticipated release for Christian romance fans. Hunter does an excellent job with her fully-fleshed, complex characters and a story that will pull on readers' hearts from beginning to end.

I knew after the first chapter that this story was going to be quite an emotional ride. The story mostly focuses on Maddy and Connor and the romance that develops between them (with plenty of chemistry and swoon-worthy moments), but it's about so much more than that. It's about fear, mistakes, forgiveness, and family. Maddy is stuck in the middle of her two older and estranged sisters. With all three of them staying at their grandmother's beach house where all the trouble started, they end up rehashing old grudges. The hope is that somehow they can find reconciliation, but it's a long ways off.

I really liked these characters, particularly Connor. He easily won me over and was the bright spot in all the mess. The other sisters had so many issues and fears and it was hard sometimes to always feel empathy for them when they were acting so childish and giving in to anger and fear so easily. A lot of it was hypocritical too - they were so judgmental of each other but not willing to change themselves. I particularly had issues with Emma (did she ever think that maybe her sister saved her from a cheater and terrible husband - and she's remarried, but can't seem to focus on that instead of her past?), and with Maddy who was so afraid and in denial that she was always sabotaging herself. I think the story felt heavy and more dramatic with these sisters than what I was expecting, which made it feel a tad overdone. Thank goodness for Connor and for the girls' grandma. I really enjoyed the romance and the inspirational aspects that lightened the story and brought some good introspective moments.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed this book, particularly the romantic storyline, and am looking forward to more from this author.

My Review

MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY is another delightful read from this author and series! Readers will easily fall in love with these characters and cheer them on as they try to find their happily-ever-after.

I just plain adored these characters! Abby is one of those characters that is so easy to relate to. She's hard-working, loyal, sweet, with a heart of gold. Zach is rough around the edges and somewhat gruff, but he also has a soft heart and is fierce in protecting his own. I loved their interactions and I especially loved how Zach didn't let Abby storm off or turn away from him. He stopped and sorted things out right then. I also loved seeing their relationship develop and love grow, leading to plenty of swoon-worthy scenes. The story also has plenty of moments when I wasn't sure how things would turn out, keeping things interesting to the very end.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this from beginning to end. It did have some more mature content as the characters tried to figure out their roles as husband and wife, so I'd recommend it to older readers, but I definitely recommend it!

Weekly Update #323, family reunion...

The past week or so we've had family in town and have been spending a ton of time with them. It's made things really busy as far as running tours and keeping up on here. Usually I get ahead before they come so that I don't have a lot I need to do while they're here, but this year life has been so crazy with quite a few unexpected things that I wasn't able to do that. I still wouldn't trade a moment though. I love my siblings and their families. Some of them leave by Monday, but one family is staying most of this coming week so there will be more fun ahead.
