Tessa longed for someone to transform her own life.
She gazed at the beautiful wedding ring gracing her friend Mari’s left hand. Promise me I’ll find love again, will You, Lord? That felt like an immature request to make of God—He wasn’t some vending machine you could pull a lever and have your wishes granted. But she was sure God knew her heart, and her heart was lonely. Content, but lonely.
Tessa must have let her eyes wander toward the house next door, because Mari nudged her with a knowing look. “Yvonne said your new neighbor came into the bakery the other day. She made a point of telling me how handsome he was. Charming, too, in a soft-spoken kind of way.”
Handsome, charming and soft-spoken were good adjectives for Neal. But he was also a bit sullen, sad, and seemed to have a lot on his mind. Based on what he’d told her, he was indeed wrestling with some big issues.
