Summary

Lucy Simpson just survived the worst day of her life. Rather than stick around to deal with the fallout of losing her accounting job and the betrayal of her longtime boyfriend, she makes a split-second decision to pull up roots and move to Hawaii.

She arrives with a suitcase, a reservation at a cheap hotel, and a whole lot of hope. Relieved to be an ocean away from her overbearing father, Lucy creates a list of experiences to help her explore what she really wants from life. Her new friends from the singles ward become her cheerleaders and help her cross items off the list one by one.

As she does, she learns a little bit more about herself, about life and about love. But when a family emergency calls her home, will she be forced to choose between her old life and a new love?

My Review

THE FLIGHT OF A BUTTERFLY is a great title for this story about a girl who decides it's time she spread her wings and has to figure out what she wants and who she is. It's a sweet story about experiencing new things, finding new friends, doing tough things, letting go, and holding on. Recommended for new adult romance, contemporary romance, women's fiction, and LDS romance readers.

What I liked about this story was that it wasn't all about the romance. It's also not inspirational per se. The main character is from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but there weren't any religious moments. What it was about was Lucy figuring out who she is away from her cheating boyfriend (who she might've taken back if she'd stayed home), an accounting career she doesn't want, and her family. It takes guts to just up and move to a new place with no real plans or job all by yourself. I appreciated the way Lucy came into contact with new people and how she made new friends. I enjoyed that she was honest in some of her fears, but took the risk to cross some items off her bucket list anyway. I also knew early on which guy I thought she should go for and wanted to give her a good smack once in a while for being so oblivious. I appreciated that the author had a few twists and, even though Lucy becomes almost a different person in Hawaii, the old Lucy is still there and finds her way out when some things happen. She had to learn to reconcile both sides of herself and figure out if some risks were still worth taking and some dreams still worth fighting for. And through all that, the romance is there, weaving through the story in a rather adorable way.

There were some editing issues here and there. Just some typos and some places where the transitions from scene to scene were a little rough. However, it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed this one quite a bit! The characters were all easy to relate to in one way or another. Lucy is a conflicted character with some growth to do and some things to learn. Some lessons she learns quickly and others take her a lot longer. She definitely tends to run away versus facing her problems, but she figures it out in the end, and the journey getting there was full of heart, friendship, challenges, and love. Definitely worth the read!

About the Author

Rachel grew up reading every book she could get her hands on and spending time with her cat. At least, that was the report in every annual Christmas letter. The humiliation was enough to spur her into action, and she began writing and she never stopped. Rachel studied English at Brigham Young University-Idaho and then wrote and blogged in between the births of her six children. She currently lives in West Jordan with her family, and while she no longer has a cat, she still reads every book she can get her hands on.
