My Picks

Anne of Green Gables
by L. M Montgomery

Obviously this is a must-read for any little girl. I received my first copy as a gift from a friend at my 8th birthday party. It was the first book I really dove into on my own and couldn't stop reading. My first book boyfriend crush was Gilbert Blythe. Is there anyone who didn't adore him? I've read it several times since and have also watched the movies. It's one I share with my girls and still love to this day.

Scottish Chiefs
by Jane Porter

I have fond memories of sitting with my siblings in my family's living room on the couch either across from my dad or next to him and listening to my him read this book. We read a chapter every night until it was finished. My dad collected the N.C. Wyeth illustrated editions and when he came to a picture, he'd turn it and show us. When I got married I began my own collection. When I look at, think about, or read this book now, it always feels a little like coming home. Plus, it's just a really good story, although sad too.

Brer Rabbit

I remember reading this with my dad and siblings, as well as watching the Disney movie. I loved the music in the movie and my dad would whistle along. We had both of the books pictured, both Disney adaptations, which are now out of print, of course. I own a different compilation that I've shared with my kids. That Brer Rabbit was so smart and made me laugh. I was always afraid he was going to get it, but then he'd outsmart Brer Bear and Brer Fox.

Amelia Bedelia
by Peggy Parish

This was one of my mom's favorites. We'd laugh and laugh over the situations Amelia Bedelia would get herself into. Completely ridiculous, but really quite hilarious to children. 🙂

Bunnicula
by
Deborah Howe and James Howe

This book... just thinking about it cracks me up. It was my first book that referenced vampires. It really is done so marvelously. The humor and sarcasm... it's great. If you haven't read this one, definitely do. It's also one of my kids' favorites.

Redwall
by
Brian Jacques

My dad read this to me and my brother growing up. We both loved the adventure and fighting, but also the well-drawn characters. Then there was the food... is it weird that all the descriptions of food made our mouths water even though the food was for animals? That's some good writing right there. Lol!

Little Women
by Louisa May Allcott

I still love this classic story. We've seen several movie adaptations as well. My most recent favorite was the one done by PBS Masterpiece, which I own and highly recommend. I liked that it is longer and I found that Amy and Laurie didn't bother me like they sometimes did in the 2000 release with Winona Ryder, although I do have that version as well and do like it. I think Ryder, Susan Sarandon and Claire Danes were my favorites from that version. If you haven't seen the Masterpiece version, definitely take the time to watch it. And, of course, you should read the book and the sequels.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
by C. S. Lewis

I still love this series to this day. It is one of those classics that resonates with any age and reader. My family read the whole series and I've begun reading it with my kids as well. We've just started this one and already read The Magician's Nephew. Of all the books, the second in the series has always been my favorite and is the one that has also been portrayed in movies. I remember watching it on PBS when I was a kid and just took a look at that version... it's amazing how old it looks now. Cinematography has come a long way since the 1990s, but I do have to say that the acting and story were quite in line with the book and well done.

The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh
by A. A. Milne

I've been a Winner-the-Pooh fan forever, my favorite character being Tigger (and why yes, I can sing the entire Tigger song from start to finish 😄). I grew up reading the stories and watching the cartoon series, then watching the movies as Disney released them. We own them all. I was thrilled when they released Christopher Robin last year and loved it! It was perfect for fans like me who knew all the different sayings and characters so well.

Richard Scarry's Best Storybook Ever
by Richard Scarry

When I went to pick the last book for this post I wasn't sure which one to go with. We read a lot when I was a kid, in case you couldn't tell. 😉 This version, which is the same as the one I grew up with, has lots of different stories and such, with lots of pictures. I picked it because there is one story that I remember to this day and can even picture the illustrations. It's called Good Night, Little Bear. There is a cub who is up on his dad's shoulders and they play a game where his dad pretends he doesn't know his son is up there and he goes looking all over for him. It's quite cute and I loved it as a kid.

So there are my picks. How about you? What books did you read as a child?
