My Review
THE INNS OF DEVONSHIRE is a collection of three clean romances set at three inns in Regency England. Readers will enjoy these shorter stories with delightful characters and sweet romance, but where there are also heartfelt messages to be find. Definitely recommended to fans of this line of books and those who enjoy the genre.
The Seventh Star Inn, by Sally Britton is a story about a woman who was a vicar's daughter, but due to his death, has seen lowered circumstances for her and her mother. The live across the town's inn and have been supported by a town who looks after its own. It's also a story about a widower with a young daughter who has recently inherited and must figure out how to move forward with his new responsibilities. The two slowly build a friendship to the possibility of more. I loved this story from beginning to end! The characters were wonderful and I loved that even the secondary characters never felt flat, but each had their own personalities. I also really liked how the story touched on both of the characters' insecurities and how they worked through them. Most of all, I loved this father's relationship with his daughter and how much the daughter was involved in this story, and the romance that takes place. I was so easily endeared to these characters.
The Truth about Mr. Blackmore, by Annette Lyon is a story about an orphan woman who has basically become a slave in her aunt's and uncle's inn, working long hours only for a roof over her head and food to eat. It's also about a writer who has his own struggles and comes to the inn to work on his next book. They find a kinship and a friendship and love grows from there. This story was really sweet. I liked the characters and how the romance slowly builds. I did want a bit more development and bit less drama, but overall enjoyed it.
The Coachman’s Choice, by Deborah M. Hathaway Goodness! Hathaway can really write some charming men! The stagecoach driver who was the hero of this story was full of devilish charm. She also can write some strong heroines and I loved, loved this one! The characters' personalities literally leaped from the pages. I loved getting to know them and see into each of their hearts. One of them had to figure out if dreams could change and the other had to deal with feeling worthy of someone's love, with being enough. Both themes were easy to relate to and pulled on my heart. A completely delightful story that I would read again.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This collection was such a joy to read! The characters were easy to relate to and love, there was plenty of depth while also being sweet, and the romances all had chemistry that slowly built through each story. I'm looking forward to more from this line of books and these authors!
