My Review

HER TEMPORARY COWBOY is a heartwarming story about a rodeo cowboy who grew up in the foster system and has made his two best friends his family, and a woman with a wonderful family who runs her family's ranch but who feels unheard and unseen. They find themselves dating by her family's assumptions and then mistakenly engaged when two kids witness what they think is an engagement and they never get a chance to explain. Things just get more complicated from there. It's a fun, light story with some delightful characters and a few romantic sparks.

I liked all the characters. There are quite a few of them, but I didn't have any issues keeping them all straight. Both Lucky and Lizzie were equally frustrating at parts. Communication and honesty would have cleared things up between them, but instead they let outside pressure and expectations as well as their own inner doubts fuel things. Eventually they do figure it out, with some cute moments as well as a few sad ones along the way, to a very satisfying happily-ever-after.

I did struggle with this story. I had a hard time completely buying into the premise in how the story unfolded. There was also a lot of redundancy and more telling instead of experiencing the story than I would have liked. I've enjoyed other books by this author, so I think this one wasn't quite right for me, but others won't have the same issues. Regardless, it was still a cute read.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I wanted more from this story or to connect with it better, but it was still a light, fun, heartwarming story. Fans of the genre should enjoy it.

A Noble Scheme

Christian Historical Romance, Suspense
Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & eBook, 352 Pages
March 19, 2024 by Bethany House Publishers

Summary

In the opulent and perilous world of high society's most elite—and most dangerous—families, two investigators must set aside their broken hearts to uncover the truth.

Gemma Parks is known to the London elite as G. M. Parker, a columnist renowned for her commentary on the cream of society. Behind the scenes, she uses her talents to aid the Imposters in their investigations by gathering intel at events and providing alibis for the firm's members through her columns. Yet her clandestine work would be more exhilarating if it weren't for the constant presence of the gentleman who broke her heart.

Graham Wharton has never had eyes for anyone but Gemma, and she left his heart in tatters when she walked away from him. When the Imposters take on a new job to recover a kidnapped boy mistaken for his aristocratic cousin, Graham is determined to use the time with Gemma to not only restore the missing boy, but to also win back the only woman he's ever loved. As they trace the clues laid out before them, Graham and Gemma must devise a noble scheme to save the boy's life and heal their hearts.

My Review

A NOBLE SCHEME is a story about a group of characters who make a livelihood by being paid investigators. This second book in the series focuses on a couple introduced in the first book where their lives are unfolded, both past and present. It's also about two little boys who are cousins and the scheme they're involved in. It's full of suspense, family, and friendship as well as just a bit of danger and a strong theme of faith and forgiveness. Fans of the author, series and genre will find much to enjoy about this story!

I fell in love with these characters in the first book and enjoyed re-entering this storybook world to get reacquainted with them. I loved Graham even more as this story started off. Gemma took me a bit longer to warm up to even though I understood how she was feeling. These two had a pretty tough path to reconcile with their past and each other and move forward to their happily-ever-after, leading to some major feels in this story. I also liked the intrigue and suspense of the case they investigate in this story. There were a few things here and there that didn't quite work for me, but otherwise this was a solid second book in this series. I can't wait for book three!

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a uniquely creative and heartfelt story. I liked the characters, the setting, the faith elements, and the ongoing comradery of these characters. An overall excellent release from this author!

Author Interview

Would you tell us about your main characters, Elsie and Ryan, from THE RANCHER'S SECRET CRUSH?

Elsie Parks is a by-the-book city girl and Ryan Sloan is a free-spirited rodeo cowboy. They are complete opposites. And I could not have enjoyed writing their love story more. They challenged each other in so many unexpected ways.

What was the most important thing Elsie learned from Ryan as he helped her learn about ranching?

Elsie learned that she is capable of so much more than she believed. Ryan helped Elsie find a deeper confidence in herself – one that ultimately gives her the courage to reach for what she really wants.

What part or aspect of this story do you love the most, and do you have a favorite quote you could share with readers?

This quote came to mind right away. When I was writing this particular scene, I had planned to stop for the evening when I finished the chapter. However, when I wrote this last line, I had to keep writing that night. I needed to know just how Elsie was going to respond to Ryan’s honesty.

At the back door, Ryan turned around and watched her for a beat. Then one more. Finally, he said, “What I really want is to kiss you, Elsie Marie. But sometimes we just don’t get what we want.”

What’s one of your hobbies or something we might not know about you?

I love to cook and bake. If you subscribe to my newsletter, I’m usually talking about baking, and I often share my latest favorite baking recipe. Something readers might not know is that when I have scenes in my books with the characters eating, I use meals and dishes that I have cooked (or plan to cook) for my own family. I’ve gotten way off track more than once researching specific cocktail recipes or specific dishes when I’m supposed to be writing. And if it’s a new to me recipe, then I have to print it out, make a shopping list, and get to cooking. LOL! Fortunately, my family doesn’t complain.

What three books are currently on your tbr?<

Claimed (Lair of the Wolven, Book 1) by JR Ward

The Bride Wore White by Amanda Quick

Just One More Moment (The Sterling Family, Book 1) by Carly Phillips

What are you working on next?

I’m working on a new story for the Christmas Town anthology that I am fortunate to write with other Harlequin Heartwarming authors. Christmas Town is such a fun place, and I can’t wait to jump back in with the characters there whenever I get the chance.

If the Boot Fits

Christian Historical Romance
Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & eBook, 368 Pages
March 12, 2024 by Bethany House Publishers

Summary

One fateful night will change their destinies forever. . . .

Convinced that his stepmother and half brothers have been wrongfully evicted by cattle king Eli Dearing, Asher Ellis uses the cover of an extravagant ball to break into the Three Cedars’ ranch house to search for proof. On the verge of discovery, he flees, but a boy’s cry compels him to make a daring rescue.

Spunky and independent Samantha Dearing balks when she learns the ball her father is hosting is nothing more than a matrimonial ambush. Taking a break from unwanted suitors, Samantha spots a thief fleeing her home. When the stranger ends up saving her brother’s life, she hides the only clue to his identity left behind–his boot–and resolves to find him herself.

When Samantha encounters the older brother of a student she tutors, all thoughts of the bootless mystery man vanish. Asher values family above wealth, a rare trait that opens her heart. Afraid she will discover his past misconduct, Asher tries to keep his distance, but when a series of suspicious accidents befall her, he vows to protect her, even though saving her life could mean losing her love.

My Review

IF THE BOOT FITS is a gender-bending, smartly rewoven tale of Cinderella set in historic Texas. It's classic Witemeyer with this inspirational western romance full of family, humor, romance, faith, and a bit of suspenseful danger. Fans of the author and genre are sure to enjoy this delightful story!

I'm really enjoying this series where each books stands on its own and is a twist on a classic fairy tale, this one being Cinderella. This time it's not the girls who loses a shoe behind, but the hero of the story instead. He's also the poor one trying to support his family instead of it being the heroine. I loved seeing how this author parallelled the original in this story in such a creative way. It was very well done. Add to that characters who I couldn't help but love, emotional depth between all the different themes, faith that is interwoven throughout in a natural way, a bit of suspense and danger, and romance that literally sparks off the page and you have a story that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Here are a few of the pieces of wisdom I highlighted from this book:

"...you need to serve from a place of humility, otherwise people will likely reject the help you wish to give. . . . Ministry is not about you helping those in need, it's about God helping those in need through you."

"Feeling fear don't make you weak. It makes you human. Bein' strong means you don't let fear dictate your actions."

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a wonderful story! It was fun with all the feels and kept me engaged from beginning to end. I'm looking forward to the next western fairy tale retelling in this series!

Pride and Preston Lin
By Christina Hwang Dudley
Contemporary Romance, Retelling
Paperback & eBook, 288 Pages
March 19, 2024 by Third State Books

Summary

In this modern-day retelling of Pride and Prejudice, the quick-witted and contrarian Lissie Cheng must navigate societal pressures and her growing attraction to the rich and enigmatic Preston Lin.

Lissie is the middle of three sisters, orphaned and taken in by their aunt and uncle. Both she and her older sister, Jenny, work in the family restaurant while pursuing their education and career dreams. When Lissie accidentally serves a dish containing shellfish paste to an allergic customer, she runs afoul of the wealthy Lin family. Their golden boy, Preston, star swimmer and Stanford Ph.D. student, is as handsome as he is self-righteous. Lissie hates him and everything he stands for, but circumstances keep bringing them together. Can she overcome her pride and her initial misgivings about Preston Lin and his condescending mother? Will love prevail, and will these enemies turn into lovers?

Pride and Preston Lin by popular Regency romance writer Christina Hwang Dudley is a hilarious and earnest contemporary riff on Jane Austen’s classic work. And readers will undoubtedly root for Lissie Cheng, a sassy new Elizabeth Bennet for our times, to find lasting love and happiness.

Praise for the Book

"In a world with so many Pride & Prejudice adaptations, a new one has to be truly special to stand out, and this one is. Dudley’s contemporary debut is faithful to its source material but finds clever ways to make it work in a modern setting, while also adding an authentic Chinese American perspective on the beloved story. A warm, sweet story with all the witticisms Austen fans savor."— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

My Review

CALLING OF LIGHT is the conclusion to a young adult fantasy series where a trained assassin must choose her future and the part she will play in defeating an evil ancient magic. It's set in a lush fantasy world with likable characters and an interesting magical system. Those who have or would enjoy Leigh Bardugo's The Shadow and Bone series and YA fantasy will enjoy this book and series.

I think the best part of this book and series were the characters. I adored Sirscha, Saenta, Meilek, and Theyen. I especially loved the friendships and banter and teasing, but also the sweet moments between them and the dangerous ones when they fought to protect and save. I also really enjoyed seeing Sirscha slowly come a bit more into her own along with the rest of these characters who step up as they face danger and to protect Sirscha and their different peoples. I also really liked the magical world with the different types of magic and an ancient lore. I liked getting to journey with these characters through different lands and people. I liked that Sirscha was a trained spy and assassin but a flawed human as well. The ending was quite well done and very gratifying.

There were some pretty decent words of wisdom throughout this book. Here is one such piece of wisdom:
"But I've long since decided to stop allowing others to define who and what I am."

I really enjoyed this series and this final book. I would have loved it more if I felt it didn't feel a bit too much like The Shadow and Bone series from Leigh Bardugo. This won't be an issue if you haven't read that series. There were also action parts that didn't work for me because what the words described didn't visualize correctly (or written out on paper) didn't work, so I think those scenes needed to be worked through better. There were also some hints to different things but some that never came into play or led to anything. Sometimes Sirscha wasn't consistent with her character. I liked that romance wasn't a big part of the story and there were no love scenes (thank goodness!), but I also had some issues with parts of how that played out as well since it didn't always make sense to me. I also got frustrated with so much inaction on Sirscha's and others' parts.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable ending to an enjoyable series. I wanted a bit more development in some areas, but I fell in love with these characters and this fantasy world. I'll definitely be checking out this author's next book!

Content: Some suggestive references, LGBTQ+ relationships, and violence that is a bit gruesome in parts, but would consider this clean.

Summary

The Recorder’s fate has been sealed, but the Consortium is not the only enemy.

Labeled an aberration by the Consortium, the Recorder is not yet free. Time is running out as an engineered bioweapon wreaks havoc on friend and foe alike.

Stopping both the biological agent and the people who created it is no easy task, especially since the Recorder and her friends are trapped on a research station infested with behemoth insects. Without Consortium technology, the probability of neutralizing the threat falls to nothing. In order to save her allies, the Recorder must activate a drone, but her success might destroy any hope for freedom, a future, and a name.

(Affiliate links included.)

My Review

GUARDIAN is the concluding book in this recorder's story as she continues to fight to protect those she cares for and help in finding a cure to a deadly virus. It's full of danger, adventure, friendship, political intrigue, and a touch of romance and faith. Recommended to science fiction and space opera fans.

I've loved diving into this science fiction world with its different classes among the people as well as government. The recorders themselves and the Consortium is fascinating on its own as well as how it interacts with society. There were so many questionable ideals and policies, but readers weren't specifically told what to think. Instead the author allowed readers to come to their own conclusions along with the characters as the series proceeded. I liked that the faith element was light and the theme of each human life having value. I liked that the romance was also light as it wasn't the main focus of the story, but enhanced the story instead. I also really liked these characters. There are quite a few of them and I didn't always keep them straight, but I really enjoyed the found family and friendships. It's an exciting read with these characters not always knowing who they can trust. They battle massive insects as well as members of the Consortium and then other members of their society.

I only had a couple of issues with the story. One was that the dialogue was so stilted sometimes. I did have to remind myself that the three books in the series take place over a very short space of time so the heroine might not have organically developed as I would have wanted and as she would have over more time. I also wanted her to be braver, act quicker, and do better in relaying information to others so things were figured out faster. I also would have like a better recap at the beginning and a bit of a refresher on why the consortium believed and acted as they did.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is such a unique series with its fascinating storybook world and characters. I enjoyed reading this third book and will definitely grab this author's next release. Definitely a recommended read for sci-fi fans!
