Ida, in Love and in Trouble
By Veronica Chambers
Young Adult Historical Fiction, Romance
Audiobook, Hardcover & eBook, 400 Pages
September 10, 2024 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Summary

For fans of Bridgerton and The Davenports comes a sweeping historical novel from bestselling author Veronica Chambers about courageous (and flirtatious) Ida B. Wells as she navigates society parties and society prejudices to become a civil rights crusader.

Before she became a warrior, Ida B. Wells was an incomparable flirt with a quick wit and a dream of becoming a renowned writer. The first child of newly freed parents who thrived in a community that pulsated with hope and possibility after the Civil War, Ida had a big heart, big ambitions, and even bigger questions: How to be a good big sister when her beloved parents perish in a yellow fever epidemic? How to launch her career as a teacher? How to make and keep friends in a society that seems to have no place for a woman who speaks her own mind? And – always top of mind for Ida – how to find a love that will let her be the woman she dreams of becoming?

Ahead of her time by decades, Ida B. Wells pioneered the field of investigative journalism with her powerful reporting on violence against African Americans. Her name became synonymous with courage and an unflinching demand for racial and gender equality. But there were so many facets to Ida Bell and critically acclaimed writer Veronica Chambers unspools her full and colorful life as Ida comes of age in the rapidly changing South, filled with lavish society dances and parties, swoon-worthy gentleman callers, and a world ripe for the taking.

My Review

IDA, IN LOVE AND IN TROUBLE is the fictionalized historical story of Ida B. Wells as she grows into a young woman and a voice in journalism for civil rights. Lots of historical facts including letters and published pieces from Ida's life are included. Recommended to history lovers and those who want to know more about this powerful woman.

I found this story to be an insightful look at life for a young African American during this time period and in Ida's everyday life. She has a lot of decisions to make as she grows into a young woman in her mid 20s. She faces a lot of challenges as a child of slavery, a woman, and an African American. She has so much passion for her people. She wants to make a difference and be heard. She wants to learn about everything and develop her intellect. She wants to be a wife and have a family, but not have that diminish her influence in journalism and pushing forward civil rights. The story shares her letters and different articles she writes. It also makes note of what is going on in the country at the time and life in Memphis where Ida mostly lives. Readers learn about her various beaus, a bit about her family, and her struggle to find her place.

I did have a tough time with this story. I felt like there were lots of little info dumps. The letters and factual information about Ida weren't weaved through the story as well as I would have liked. The chapters didn't all have notes about how much time took place between each of them. There was no emotional drive, especially one connecting the story from beginning to end. It felt like each chapter was its own segment and I felt like it was all very disconnected. I didn't feel immersed in the story so that I was able to experience her life with her. Instead, it felt like I was being told her story and given historical facts. Ida brings her younger sister to live with her and then she's practically never mentioned afterwards, which again, felt very disconnected. The romance was there but the guys didn't really have unique voices and there was not emotional attachment or chemistry you could feel. Readers are just told what happens and how Ida feels. Ida is mostly in her young to mid 20s, so she's older and on her own. As the audience is YA, I don't know that it's a good fit for the age group. I think if you already know about and love her and you want to eat up everything known about her, then you might enjoy this. I just wanted a lot more. Instead, I mostly felt bored no matter how much I desired to want to learn more about her and feel inspired by her story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? If you're looking for more details about everyday life for this historical figure, a figure who you already love, then you should enjoy this story. Or I'd recommend reading a chapter here and there to learn more about her. Recommended more to historical nonfiction and fiction readers who aren't looking for a page-turner.

Death at Morning House
By Maureen Johnson
YA Mystery, Thriller, LGBTQ+
Audiobook, Hardcover, Paperback & eBook, 384 Pages
August 6, 2024 by HarperTeen

Summary

An instant New York Times and Indie bestseller!

From the bestselling author of the Truly Devious books, Maureen Johnson, comes a new stand-alone YA about a teen who uncovers a mystery while working as a tour guide on an island and must solve it before history repeats itself.

The fire wasn’t Marlowe Wexler’s fault. Dates should be hot, but not hot enough to warrant literal firefighters. Akilah, the girl Marlowe has been in love with for years, will never go out with her again. No one dates an accidental arsonist.

With her house-sitting career up in flames, it seems the universe owes Marlowe a new summer job, and that’s how she ends up at Morning House, a mansion built on an island in the 1920s and abandoned shortly thereafter. It’s easy enough, giving tours. Low risk of fire. High chance of getting bored talking about stained glass and nut cutlets and Prohibition.

Oh, and the deaths. Did anyone mention the deaths?

Maybe this job isn’t such a gift after all. Morning House has a horrific secret that’s been buried for decades, and now the person who brought her here is missing.

All it takes is one clue to set off a catastrophic chain of events. One small detail, just like a spark, could burn it all down—if someone doesn’t bury Marlowe first.

My Review

DEATH AT MORNING HOUSE is a page-turning mystery set on an island during the summer tour season. Two stories, one in the past and one present, simultaneously unfold as they're linked together by an old house on an island where the stories take place, giving this book a very Gothic feel. There is a consistent underlying feeling of suspense and unique characters. Fans of the genre and of the author will find their usual thrills in this book.

I've had this author's books on my list to read for a long time, so I was thrilled to find her new release was a standalone and have the opportunity to read and review it. I feel like the author is definitely a master of mystery and suspense as there was that underlying feeling of eeriness through the whole book. She also doesn't give much away, so the villain could have been any of the characters and she made you question them all. The characters were well drawn, each with their own unique personalities. This made it easy to keep them all apart which can be difficult to do when there are so many of them. I liked the dual timeline as that had a very Gothic feel and was its own mystery that unfolds at the same time the present story unfolds. It was a bit blood chilling in places too. The story itself was engaging from beginning to end, making this a book that would be easy to be engrossed in for a single-sitting reading. Maybe keep the lights on at night. 😉

I had a few frustrations with the story. I felt like a lot of things that happened were glossed over by the characters and not shared or actually investigated. I also felt like the lesbian romance was more at the forefront than it should have been with someone having just died and the girls not knowing what was going on. I didn't love the main character, which always makes it a bit harder to then love the story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This definitely was a suspensefully thrilling read! A Gothic, secluded setting and an engaging, eerie plot gave some good chills for suspense fans.

Content: Some swearing (s and f words), some suggestive details, murder (not overly gruesome or descriptive).

The Coverton Charade
(Houses of Yorkshire #3)
By Sarah E. Ladd
Historical Romance, Clean & Wholesome
Audiobook, Hardcover, Paperback & eBook, 352 Pages
September 3, 2024 by Thomas Nelson

Summary

A long-held family feud reignites when two rival antiquities brokers arrive at the same house party in Regency England.

Olivia Brannon knows her goals are unconventional. As a young woman in Regency England, her best bet—according to society—is to marry well and secure a steady future for herself. But Olivia has never been interested in convention. She’d prefer to follow in her deceased father’s footsteps and journey to foreign lands in search of rare and valuable antiquities.

Eager to make a name for herself in the antiquities world, Olivia jumps at an invitation to join a wealthy widow at the famed Cloverton Hall to evaluate her private antiquities collection. Secrecy of the task is vital, and in order to conceal her efforts Olivia must pretend to be a house party guest to avoid suspicion and to explain her presence.

Lucas Avery, whose father was a rival of Olivia’s father, has also arrived at the Cloverton Hall house party, hired by the new master of Cloverton Hall—the widow’s nephew—to appraise the renowned Cloverton Hall collection. When Lucas discovers Olivia masquerading as a party guest while covertly conducting her own assessment, he’s keen to renew the family rivalry. But as their paths frequently cross, he’s unprepared for the effect the refreshingly honest—and beautiful—Olivia has on him.

Yet all is not as it seems. Both Olivia and Lucas are shocked by the astonishing discovery of counterfeit pieces, and when the unexpected occurs, everyone is a suspect . . . and Olivia and Lucas both must choose whom they will trust. Only the hidden treasure will allow Louisa and her sister to gain their freedom.

My Review

THE CLOVERTON CHARADE is a story about a woman trying to build her own place in the world, a man who is trying to save his business, and a family trying to navigate loss and new beginnings through their collected antiquities. It's about the separation of the classes, societal expectations, forgiveness, family and love. There is a bit of a mystery to solve as well. Recommended to fans of the author and genre!

Read this book if you like:
- House parties in Regency England
- Genuine characters who you'll fall in love with
- Mystery and a bit of suspense
- Sweet romance between two childhood friends
- Themes of forgiveness, loyalty and family

I loved these characters from the start while being pulled into this intriguing plot in the world of antiquities. Olivia has been pushed back from what she should be doing after her father's death and her uncle taking over. As she's a woman, she's just not given the same opportunities or respect. She wants to prove herself and build her reputation so that she can continue working in antiquities. She's confident, stubborn, intelligent, and sweet. Lucas is trying to save his family's antiquity business after the loss of his dad. He has an opportunity to do just that. He's congenial, honest, skilled and intelligent. Both of their families have a history together, so they already have a childhood friendship from years earlier. It was fun to see these two run into each other at the same house party. They had to navigate what they were trying to accomplish, each other, and then all the family and guests who didn't know all they were doing. I also liked how the mystery slowly crept into the story. The suspense starts in a fairly small way and then slowly grows to a climax. I also thought the romance was sweet and resolved nicely. It was a pretty strong aspect of the story, but still an enjoyable one.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was another enjoyable read from this author. Likable characters, an engaging plot and a sweet romance made for a delightful read. I'm looking forward to this author's next release!

Summary

As a wave of murders grips Southern California, an unlikely pair must untangle the mysterious patterns of an elusive killer. A propulsive new series by New York Times bestselling author Jeffery Deaver and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Isabella Maldonado.

Carmen Sanchez is a tough Homeland Security agent who plays by the rules. But when her sister is attacked, revealing a connection to a series of murders across Southern California, she realizes a conventional investigation will not be enough to stop the ruthless perpetrator.

With nowhere else to turn, Sanchez enlists the aid of Professor Jake Heron, a brilliant and quirky private security expert who, unlike Sanchez, believes rules are merely suggestions. The two have a troubled past, but he owes her a favor and she’s cashing in. They team up to catch the assailant, who, mystifyingly, has no discernible motive and fits no classic criminal profile. All they have to go on is a distinctive tattoo and a singular obsession that gives this chillingly efficient tactician his nickname: Spider.

Over the next seventy-two hours, Sanchez and Heron find themselves in the midst of a lethal chess match with the killer as they race to stop the carnage. As the victims mount, so do the risks. Because this spider’s web of intrigue is more sinister―and goes far deeper―than anyone could possibly anticipate.

My Review

FATAL INTRUSION is a psychological thriller full of twists and turns as a Homeland Security investigator and a college professor try to stop a killer. Likable, fully fleshed characters and an engaging plot make for a fully un-put-downable read!

It's been a while since I've read a book like this. It was completely engaging from the first page as I tried to figure out what was going on along with these characters as they try to stop what was happening. The dialogue is fantastically written. I loved Carmen so much! She's whip smart, skilled, intense, but has some vulnerability too. A very complex character. She'd do anything for her sister, even if it means putting up with Jake. Jake is also his own unique character with his own quirks and motives. I also thought the whole intrusion aspect to be quite interesting. Their history isn't completely disclosed in this book, just parts of it. There's a hint of a possible romance possibly later in the series, but either way it goes works for this story. The villain comes across as a regular guy (and creepily could be) but is a highly trained killer who is targeting his victims. The plot itself keeps you guessing with some red herrings and other things that are just one piece of the puzzle as it builds to a climatic ending.

The only thing I didn't like was a few of the suggestive parts that were a bit too much and slightly disturbing. I didn't need those references in my head and would have happily done without them.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is definitely a page-turning thriller! Great characters, an engaging plot, a cause I can cheer for and a expertly written story. I'm eagerly anticipating this duo's next case!

Content: Murder and violence (not overly detailed, but still descriptive and fairly gruesome), some swearing (both s and f words), sexual references (mostly fade-to black or suggestive).

Summary

Sowerby, England, 1802

Miss Genevieve Wilde—a magistrate’s daughter and independent heiress—is determined to meet life’s challenges all on her own, just as her late-father had taught her. So when her father’s pocket watch is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, especially when the local authorities prove incompetent.

Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. It’s a choice Ginny regrets when former Bow Street officer Jack Travers arrives on her doorstep. He is frustratingly flirtatious, irritatingly handsome, and entirely unpredictable, and Ginny wonders if she’ll be able to resist such a man.

But after Ginny discovers that the missing watch is just a small part of a larger, more frightening plot against her, she needs Jack’s help more than ever. To protect her home and her reputation, the two enter into a risky charade—pretending Jack is her cousin so he can begin his investigation, starting with the household staff. As they work together to unravel the mystery, Ginny finds herself falling fast for her charismatic thief-taker, leaving her heart in just as much danger as her life.

My Review

A HEART WORTH STEALING is about a woman who is unknowingly threatened and the Bow Street Runner who comes to her aid. It has wonderful characters, a country setting, danger that intensifies as the book unfolds, humor and swoon-worthy moments. An adorable and fun read perfect for Regency romance fans!

This was such a fun story! Not that it was all "fun." The author did a fabulous job in making it not too light and fluffy with her genuine, relatable characters and so much being told through meaningful looks. I felt this story instead of being told it, which I feel like shows that an author has really arrived and is doing well in the craft. The banter, chemistry and humor were all fantastic! There was also an underlying feel of suspense throughout that grew to a climatic point towards the end. The story was predictable, but I loved all of it regardless. Plus, I got what I expected when I pick up one of this author's and publisher's books: a well-written story with a happily-ever-after ending.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a pure delight to read! Lovely characters, engaging plot, and sweet romance. Highly recommended!

Summary

Danger and passion collide when a plucky young woman becomes embroiled in a Bow Street investigation alongside a handsome officer.

London, 1803

As the daughter of a renowned actress, Verity Travers is a privileged lady of high society—and the last woman one would suspect as having worked as a private investigator. But she has hung up that dangerous hat to live the uninspiring life of a gentlewoman. However, when she and her dearest friend become victims of an armed robbery, Verity finds herself swept back into the clandestine world of mystery and crime as she seeks to bring the thief to justice. There’s just one complication: the persistent and dashingly handsome Bow Street Runner Nathaniel Denning, who always seems to cross her path.

Verity is confident she could accomplish her work quickly if only Nathaniel would stay out of her way. Focusing on the task at hand becomes more and more difficult as his keen mind, quick wit, and determination to keep her out of danger muddle her progress—and her heart.

When the two rival investigators learn they are both pursuing the same cunning criminal, they must figure out how to navigate the delicate dance of cooperation amid a backdrop of increasing peril and an irresistible passion that sets their hearts ablaze.

My Review

SO TRUE A LOVE is a witty story about a Bow Street Runner and a young woman both trying to find a thief. The characters' backgrounds are unique, as is the plot, which makes for an intriguing read. The banter between the two main characters makes this a delightful read, while there are aspects that are full of depth. Definitely recommended to historical romance fans!

These characters were so much fun! Verity is a young woman who is a bit impulsive and confident in herself. She's intelligent and has a strong interest in solving mysteries and crimes, being influenced by her former-Bow-Street-Runner brother. She is a bit feisty with a quick wit and also loyal. Nathaniel is a dashing Bow Street Runner who doesn't know her past or family as he's newer to the job. He's a hard worker, intelligent, and steady. It doesn't hurt that he's also very good looking. They literally run into each other when they first meet and from there are thrown together a lot trying to solve the same crime. I loved that they spent a solid time together getting to know each other, which naturally leant to a friendship and then something more developing between the two of them. I liked how both of them had different family aspects and that is a big part of their lives. There are a few twists and turns. Some of it is overly predictable while a few pieces aren't tied up all prettily, which I appreciated as it allowed the story to feel more realistic. There is some action and suspense that leads to a climax, and then a beautiful and sweet ending.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable read from beginning to end. Likable characters, an engaging plot, and a sweet romance with plenty of banter and wit. I'm looking forward to picking up the next book from this author!

My Review

NO MATCH FOR LOVE is a story about loss, heartache, and misplaced guilt. It's also about family, friendship, dreams, new beginnings and love. The characters are all well drawn and likable with a palpable chemistry between the two love interests. The plot is engaging and emotionally driven, keeping readers invested. A delightful historical romance highly recommended to fans of the author and genre!

I liked so many aspects of this story! The characters were especially favorites, and not just Lucas and Lydia, but also the secondary characters who each had their own distinct personalities. Lucas was a bit of the dark and brooding hero while Lydia was full of sunshine and humor. I thought they balanced each other out marvelously. I loved how his stoicism was met by her cheer and humor. The banter and chemistry were also excellent in this book. Both characters had past heartbreak that formed who they were and their choices, some of which they needed to work through to move forward. There was a lovely family dynamic (not as much on Lydia's side), the social setting and some suspense and danger that kept things interesting. The ending was especially sweet and lovely.

I don't have much to complain about with this book. There were a few minor things that didn't logically make sense to me or feel realistic.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a wonderful story! Easily consumable and purely joyful to read. I'm happily anticipating this author's next release!

About the Author

Karen Thornell grew up reading when she should have been sleeping, but it wasn't until 2019 that she started writing. Tired of ending books and saying 'goodbye' to beloved characters, she wondered what it would be like to have her own characters that lived in her head always. It was probably a mark of sleep deprivation that she wanted people living in her head, but the idea was planted regardless.

Karen lives in Utah with her husband and kids. When not writing contemporary or regency romance, she spends her free time doing endless loads of laundry, playing board games, and, yes, talking to those characters in her head.

Summary

Family brought her home…

Can love make her stay?

Now that she’s finally back in Three Springs, Texas, Deputy Sheriff Lacey Nash wants nothing more than to reconnect with her nine-year-old daughter, Aspen. Carefree Caleb Sloan is just a distraction—even if he is surprisingly helpful. He not only pitches in to train Aspen for the junior rodeo contest, but he also makes Lacey feel both welcome in town and truly special. Though will that be enough for by-the-book Lacey…to let this fun-loving cowboy prove he’s ready for an instant family?

He placed several used wineglasses into the mini dishwasher below the counter and glanced up when the front doors opened. Surprise shot through him at the late arrival. But his smile spread slowly as if he wanted to keep the happiness to himself.

The intriguing woman walking toward the bar had always stirred something inside him. Back when he first met her, she’d been willowy and tall for her age. He’d never minded much when she looked him in the eye with her bold gaze and accepted his dares. Same as she hadn’t backed down at the lake just that morning.

If he’d been of a mind to challenge for hearts, he’d consider hers a worthy prize. Even though his own heart had never been up for the taking. Still, he couldn’t deny that the cowboy who claimed her heart would be the luckiest person around. And Caleb hated him already.

He scrubbed at a stain on the bar and tried to rescue his suddenly deflating smile. “Evening, Deputy Nash.”

“I’m off the clock.” She dropped her purse on a barstool. “I’m just Lacey right now.”There was nothing just about this particular cowgirl, even now with her chin-length red hair, striking dark brown eyes, and a certain poise that came from losing and winning life’s battles. Not that he was noticing as anything more than an impartial former-friend-turned-temporary-bartender. “Well, Just Lacey, what can I get you?”

Can't Wait for... Casters and Crowns by Elizabeth Lowham (Can't-Wait Wednesday) #CWW #WOW #bookx #newbooks #fantasy #yalit #yabooks #romancebooks #cleanreads @ShadowMountn

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. Find out more here.

This publisher has had a few fantasy series in the YA and adult genre and I have yet to not like this genre from them. I'm also a romance fan, so this YA romancy sounds like it'll be a perfect read for me. It's my pick this week...

Summary

Cursed by magic, bound by mistakes, Princess Aria’s destiny hinges on the mysterious Baron Reeves. Will love be enough to break the curse, or will war bring her kingdom to ruin? A new romantasy by Elizabeth Lowham.

When Crown Princess Aria sees her kingdom on the brink of war with the magic-wielding Casters, she takes it upon herself to speak with the Widow Morton, the most dangerous Caster in the realm. If successful, Aria will not only ensure peace but also prove to her father that she is a worthy heir. But when her negotiations fail, Aria is dealt a terrible curse: Over the course of one hundred days, she will be unable to sleep, her body and mind doomed to waste away. And then the curse will pass to her sister, until every member of the king’s line is dead.

Aria’s best hope for breaking her curse is to seek help from another Caster—the handsome and charming Baron Reeves. He may be entitled to a place at the court, but as a magic user, can he truly be trusted? She vows not be fooled by his dimpled smiles or his devotion to his brothers, but as she spends more time with him, she discovers that her heart has other ideas.

Baron has no desire to see the princess suffer—especially since she might be the key to changing the king’s opinion on Casters—but he has secrets to protect and ghosts of his own. The last person he tried to save using his magic died, and he’s not willing to risk harming someone he loves again.

As the curse continues its deadly countdown, both Aria and Baron must risk their lives and their hearts to save each other and unite a kingdom.
