To Capture His Heart
(A Proper Romance/Matchmakers #2)
By Nancy Campbell Allen
Historical Romance, Mystery
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 288 Pages
October 12, 2022 by Shadow Mountain

Summary

Seaside, England, 1886

Eva Caldwell is an accomplished and well-known photographer who often works with the local constabulary to assist in documenting crime scenes, which means she also often works alongside the handsome and charming detective, Nathan Winston. She appreciates his intellect and how he treats her like an equal, but Eva's heart is still healing from a past relationship, so, for now, she decides to keep her feelings for Nathan a secret.

One evening, Nathan arrives on her doorstep asking for a personal favor. Would Eva be available to photograph his mother's legendary, week-long dinner party and matchmaking event? The catch is that Eva would also have to pretend they are courting in order for Nathan to avoid the many single women seeking his attention.

Though wary of the charade, Eva agrees. Spending a week with the two things she loves most--her detective and her camera--sounds simple enough. And if she wants to imagine that Nathan's pretend courtship of her is real, well, what's the harm in that?

But when a criminal from Nathan's past threatens revenge on the detective, Nathan must be extra vigilant to keep his mother and the rest of the partygoers safe. He confides in Eva, and as the two work together to solve the mystery and apprehend the criminal, they find that they might capture more than they expected--each other's heart.

The Dreaming Beauty
(Standalone follow-up to The Masked Baron)
By Anneka R. Walker
Historical Romance, Retelling, Fairy Tale
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook,  Pages
July 11, 2022 by Covenant Communications

Summary

Once upon a dream, two cursed people fell in love . . .

Tansy White doesn’t want to end up alone like her three aunts who raised her, but when she is betrayed by her would-be betrothed, she fears she might never change her fate. At her aunts’ suggestion, she seizes the chance to visit Rose Cottage, the country home of her late mother. For years, dreams of the cottage have haunted Tansy, and she is convinced it holds the answer to her hidden past. But after getting caught in a terrible storm, she meets a man who is just as determined as she is to learn all her secrets.

Marcus Taylor, brother to the Duke of Westmorland, is also troubled by vivid dreams. On a sleepless night, as a tempest rages outside his brother’s estate, he makes a discovery far more mysterious than any dream: a young woman, cold as ice, lies unconscious in the library, and he is sure she is the key to solving his problems. When she wakes, what begins as a shared quest for information turns into an unexpected friendship. As they piece together the fragments of their pasts, they discover a tangled web of lies, and their feelings for each other become just as entwined. But is their love as strong as their dreams . . . or their fate?

My Review

THE DREAMING BEAUTY is a Regency romance twist on Sleeping Beauty. There are several endearing characters found in the heroine's aunts as well as a hero and a damsel in distress. An overall light, quick and sweet read.

There were some fun characters in this story. I liked Marcus from the start, although his personality was inconsistent once he is back home compared to how he is introduced in the opening chapter and I kind of wanted to see that intelligent, confident man back. He does eventually appear again, thank goodness. Tansy was a sweet girl. I wanted more personality from her as she felt a bit flat. The aunts were a riot and a good mix of personalities. The setting was enjoyable and there were a lot of fun nods to the fairy tale throughout the story. There was quite a bit of drama and back and forth towards the end but then everything concludes sweetly. Marcus was still my favorite character and I always seeing characters find happiness.

I have loved other books by this author, but it seems this series doesn't quite work for me. She almost feels like a different writer and the characters and plot feels more flat to me. I have to suspend belief a lot because the actions of the characters, particularly for the time period, don't make sense. This one was equal parts enjoyment as it was me wanting to roll my eyes at the characters and drama, and scoff at the absurdity of certain things. I also think I would have liked it better with no references to the first book as that aspect didn't really add to the story and felt a forced in.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This is a sweet story with a good mix of characters. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea but others might enjoy it, especially if they're looking for something light and sweet.

Sparrows in the Wind
By Gail Carson Levine
Middle Grade Historical Fantasy
Hardcover, Audiobook & ebook, 352 Pages
October 25, 2022 by Quill Tree Books

Summary

This latest novel from Newbery Honor author Gail Carson Levine about two princesses battling against their fates in the middle of the Trojan War is a must-read for anyone who loves Greek mythology or the Percy Jackson books!

Cassandra, a princess of Troy and follower of Apollo, is delighted when the god himself appears to her. Apollo asks to love her in exchange for giving her future sight, and she agrees—but recoils when he kisses her. Enraged, the god transforms his gift into a curse: Cassandra’s visions will never be believed.

After horrifying images of coming war and death pour into her mind, and with no one to heed her warnings, Cassandra risks her safety again and again to avert the disaster awaiting Troy.

But it will take years—and the friendship of an Amazon warrior princess named Rin—for Cassandra to find hope of success in reversing the course of the war.

With heroines to cheer for and nail-biting adventures, Newbery Honor–winning author Gail Carson Levine once again transports her readers, this time to ancient Troy, where princesses (even cursed ones) will stop at nothing to shape their fate.

By Sara Ella
YA Dystopian, Fantasy, Retelling
Hardcover, Audiobook & eBook, 368 Pages
July 12, 2022 by Enclave Escape

Summary

Solve the clues. Face your fears. Survive the Trials.

All Alice Liddell wants is to escape her Normal life in Oxford and find the parents who abandoned her ten years ago. But she gets more than she bargained for when her older sister Charlotte is arrested for having the infamous Wonder Gene—the key to unlocking the curious Wonderland Reality.

Soon, Alice receives a rather cryptic invitation to play for Team Heart in this year’s annual—and often deadly—Wonderland Trials. Now she has less than twenty-four hours to find her way into Wonderland where nothing is impossible . . . or what it seems.

The stakes are raised when she discovers players go missing during the Trials each year. Will she and her team solve the clues and find the missing players? Or will betrayal and distrust win, leaving Alice alone in a world of her own? Follow the White Rabbit into this topsy-turvy fantasy where players become prey, a sip of the wrong tea might as well be poison, and a queen’s ways do not always lead one where they ought to go.

My Review

THE WONDERLAND TRIALS is a topsy turvy dystopian twist on Alice in Wonderland. It's full of fun nods and references to the original tale, delightful characters and an engaging plot. Recommended to readers who are fans of the original, retellings and looking for a fun story.

I didn't know what to exactly expect from this story and realized that I had to throw any expectations away and just enjoy the ride. Just like the original it's based off of, this story was all over the place as Alice tries to find Wonderland and figure out her past in order to save her future. There were so many brilliant and fun nods to the original tale, and I loved how the author's imagination created this world and unfurled in this story. The plotting could have been tighter and for some things to make a bit more sense, but at the same time, it's supposed to be nonsensical and I had no issues following along and figuring out what was happening. The characters were also really fun, even though Alice definitely has her teenage moments. I'm very curious where book two will go and am looking forward to travelling to this storybook world again.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was honestly a wonderful story! Just so fun! There were so many delightful pieces and characters to soak up on this roller-coaster ride of a tale. Definitely recommended to Alice in Wonderland fans who enjoy twists and turns and books in the young adult genre!

More from Sara

Welcome to Wonderland!

When I started this journey down the rabbit hole, I had no idea where it would lead me. From switching publishers to signing a book contract during a pandemic, this writing journey has certainly been an adventure for the books!

As with every story I write, life handed me a few trials along the way with this one. I didn’t know how it would end until a few weeks before deadline. With that time crunch came an epiphany that altered a good portion of the plot—an idea that had me scrambling to rewrite entire scenes right up until the final hours before I turned the story in to my editor. It was difficult, but the book is better for it—I am better for it.

It could be said that an author shapes the story, but I personally believe it’s equally true that the story shapes the author. Every book I have written has changed me in some way. With The Wonderland Trials, I can pinpoint three takeaways that helped me grow in ways I never expected.

I learned to not take life so seriously.

We all have to do the adulting thing. We have bills to pay and homes to clean and deadlines to meet. But in the midst of all that chaos and craziness is a time to laugh. To play. To make a mess on the living room floor building Legos with my toddler or take a walk to the park.

I found myself often rushing through time with friends because I had to write or work or check more boxes off my task list. But feeling stressed and cutting friend and family time short didn’t accomplish anything. It didn’t get my book written faster. I’m not saying to put things off that need to be done—it’s important to be responsible. I am saying I learned that I have to balance work and play, and most importantly, I need to be present for those in my life.

It’s not only okay to sit back and relax now and again, it’s necessary. I need to let go of the constant to-do list and invest my time in things that bring me joy. That way, when it’s time to sit down and pound the keys, I’m filled and inspired, rather than tired and anxious.

I learned to see the beauty in found family.

They say you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family. I disagree. As a girl who was raised by a stepdad who has loved me unconditionally as his own from the time I was two, I think there is something truly special about family that you find and make your own.

There have been times I’ve felt jealous of my friends who still have their biological parents around. I lost my mom in 2012 and my birth dad in 2020. I have maybe a handful of blood relatives left. I love them to bits, and I’m so grateful for them! But my family extends beyond the boundaries of blood. When I really think about it, I have family coming out of my ears and then some.

I have besties who became my soul sisters and women who stepped in as moms and grandmas. I have big brothers who would protect me with their lives and nieces and nephews I get to spoil on holidays and birthdays. As Alice says in The Wonderland Trials, “Sometimes family isn’t the one you’re born with. It’s the one you find. Or the ones who find you.”

I learned to believe in the impossible.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m the pessimist in my family. I try to see every worst-case scenario when making a decision. I ask all the what-ifs in the book. I’m like MJ in the Spider-Man movies— “If you expect disappointment, then you can never really get disappointed.”

My husband, on the other hand, has the faith of a child. When I’m lacking in faith, he’s there to remind me of all God can do. And God almost always surprises me with how He goes about doing those things. In a world with drive-thrus, mobile bank deposits, food deliveries, and every other form of instant service we can think of, the call to be patient and wait on the Lord is often forgotten.

I want answers now. I want my family member to be healed now. I want the baby we’ve been waiting over a year to adopt now. God can do the impossible, right? So why doesn’t He hurry up and do it already?

Because God is not a vending machine. And just because He chooses not to perform the miracle I want when and how I want it, that doesn’t mean he isn’t working. In fact, it’s the waiting period when God tends to do His best work on me.

More often than not, I am the impossible one, the impossible heart that needs changing. The stubborn clay that needs molding. The cracked tea cup that needs to be fixed and filled with rivers of gold. What I see as impossible to fix or change, God sees as an opportunity to help me grow. So I’ll keep believing in the impossible. After all, God took me, an impossibly helpless sinner, and made me into something new.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts and for giving this little book a chance. Happy reading, Wonders! The impossible awaits!

Sincerely,
Sara Ella

Not Dead Yet
(Guardian #6)
By Traci Hunter Abramson
Romantic Suspense
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 346 Pages
June 13, 2022 by Covenant Communications

Summary

Cassidy Edgemont has been dead for four years. At least, that is what the world has been led to believe. After becoming unwittingly entangled in a group called the Coalition, known for using fake news to generate political unrest in the United States, Cas was offered a devastating choice: stage her own death and join her rescuers, the guardians, or risk the wrath of the organization she betrayed. She chose death.

As an invisible government operative, Cas has been living in Paris with no complications—until her family pays an unexpected visit to the European city, changing everything. They think Cas is dead, and she has to keep it that way. But when a bomb is detonated nearby and fake news incites riots in the city, Cas recognizes the mark of the Coalition.

Donovan, a fellow guardian, is summoned to join her in Paris to attempt to untangle the intricate web linking Cas’s past with the recent bombings. But as the threat level escalates, Cas must again make an impossible decision: face possible exposure to her family in her race to uncover the truth or risk the loss of innocent lives.

My Review

NOT DEAD YET was a brilliant title for this book where the heroine is supposedly dead as a cover, but has to come back alive to save her family and those she loves. For those who have followed this series, it will be fun to find cameos from previous characters and catch up on where they are in their lives. Those new to the series won't have any issues following along and meeting these characters for the first time. The suspense and mystery are weaved throughout the story while the romance between the heroine and her guardian grows. An entertaining story from beginning to end!

I always love stepping into this author's world and into this series with the Guardians. They're trained to move and carry out their missions without anyone seeing them. The heroine came on board when someone tried to kill her and she's been assisting the Guardians since then, undergoing the same training but taking on a different role than most guardians. It was interesting seeing her role mix with that of the guardian who comes to keep her safe and help her investigate what is going on. Both characters were easy to like and cheer on. I enjoyed the suspense and romantic elements throughout the story and how it all escalates to a climatic end. I had a few minor issues but nothing that interrupted my enjoyment of the book. I'm looking forward to more from this series!

In the end, was it what I wished for? I really enjoyed this one! I loved the characters and the investigation while they try to figure out what is going on and how they can stop catastrophe. Another great romantic suspense from this author and series!

More from Traci

Paris anyone? After years of restricted travel and various COVID-related challenges, I needed to spend some time back in a city I love, even if it was only as part of my fictional world. Add in my years working with the CIA, and Not Dead Yet was born.

While Not Dead Yet is technically the sixth book in the guardian series, all of these books are written as stand-alone novels, which simply visit some characters from previous novels and sometimes introduce characters that will be featured in the stories to come.

Not Dead Yet was particularly enjoyable to write, not only because it gave me an excuse to revisit my photos and memories from my most recent trips to Paris, but also because of the parallels that naturally occurred with my own life.

Cas, the main character, is the first female guardian in my fictional top-secret program of government operatives who strive to serve and protect U.S. intelligence and military personnel. When I worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, I often attended meetings in which I was the only woman in the room. Respect and loyalty had to be earned regardless of gender, and I was fortunate to work with some amazing individuals over the years. Some of those treasured work relationships come through within the pages of this book.

Another similarity to my own background is Cas’s family dynamics. She has her parents and a younger sister, which mirrors my own early childhood. Her family is often in the public eye because of their association with the media industry. While I didn’t come from the extreme wealth and fame as my character did, I do remember well what it was like to have a mom on television (The Home Hunter in Phoenix, AZ) and to have a sister working in the entertainment industry. While my sister (Tiffany Hunter) has taken over The Home Hunter in recent years, a few of her earlier positions included serving as the backstage coordinator for the Grammys as well as working as Bill Murray’s personal assistant.

Not Dead Yet blends many experiences from my past with the events of the present and the ever-present question of What if? I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The Heart of the Mountains
By Pepper Basham
Christian Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 322 Pages
July 1, 2022 by Barbour Books

Summary

Can their hearts overcome the darkness of the mountains?

To escape a forced marriage, Cora Taylor travels from England to the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of her brother, who is working as a teacher in a mission school. She hopes to find a place where her nursing skills and independent ideas will be accepted and appreciated, but nothing prepares her for the wild mixture of isolation, community, brokenness, and hope within these mountains…or in the person of Jeb McAdams.

Returning from the devastation of World War 1 emotionally damaged, Jeb McAdams struggles against the rampant mountain alcoholism to soothe his nightmares. It’s easy to hide within the mountains, or it was, before Cora Taylor arrived. Now, she seems to show up at every turn, bringing her modern ideas, curiosity, and beautiful eyes with her.

Bound by their shared war history, the pair develop an unlikely friendship, which unexpectedly hints to something more. But when Cora’s desire to help the women of the mountains crosses an unspoken line, will Jeb be able to protect this feisty flatlander from the wrath of the mountain men or will he end up losing much more than his heart?

My Review

THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS is a story where two worlds collide in the Appalachians, that between a properly raised English lady and a country man raised in the mountains. Readers will find complex characters, sweet romance, some danger, and a faith element to create a story full of heart. Definitely recommended to Christian historical romance fans and fans of the author.

I've read a handful of Basham's books and still find myself surprised with each new one. She has a way of bringing a story to life where the reader feels immersed in the setting and falling in love with the characters. This story is no different.

The Appalachians and its people came alive in this story as did the main characters. I couldn't help feeling like I was walking through mysterious, dark and dangerous woods along with Cora and feeling her fear and resolution as she faces challenge after challenge. Jeb was endeared to my heart as he struggled to honor his best friend, care for his family and do the best he could by Cora. They were both characters with their own strengths, struggles, and backgrounds who have to their own choices to make. Of course they find themselves thrown into each others' lives unintentionally until they can't help but find love. Along the way, they both deal with different aspects of faith as they learn to work through experiences they faced in the war and those they face in the mountains where prejudice and superstition runs rampant. Now to go back and read Cora's brother's story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable story from the very first page to the end. It's evenly paced with moments of desperation, danger and sweet romance throughout. Another wonderful book from this author!

Content: Some violence, drunkenness/alcoholism, and sexual references pertinent to the plot, and one closed-door scene between a married couple. Would consider clean.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Celebrate Lit, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

More from Pepper

It’s so interesting how one idea can influence an entire series, or…how one person’s story can.

The idea for The Heart of the Mountains started in Laurel’s Dream with a hint of a family history story about a girl named Kizzie. (Someday, I hope to bring Kizzie’s story to the pages of a book). From there, the idea began to grow out of a love for my Appalachian culture into a series of books which highlighted (and fictionalized) stories from my family history.

The main story in The Heart of the Mountains is about Jeb and Cora, two different people with similar servant hearts, but the secondary story that touched me so much was the one based on my great grandfather’s life. I write about it in the Author’s Note at the end of the novel, so I won’t go into detail about it. However, what I loved getting to do is bring the truth of God’s redemption in my great grandfather’s life…to life again.

I never knew “Papa Rat”. I only knew the stories handed down to me by my granny and my mama, but in writing this story, I feel as though I had a tiny opportunity to “meet” him in these pages. He was a gruff mountain man with a broken past which led him to make a whole lot of broken choices, but his story is incredibly encouraging, because it points to the God of broken people. My great grandpa wasn’t left in his brokenness, but, after years of running away from God, he would later recount that God pursued him. The beauty of Sam McAdams’ journey in The Heart of the Mountains is only a little glimpse into what I imagine my great grandpa’s redemption story looked like.

Because my great grandpa was forever changed when Jesus saved him (as any of us should be).

I think that’s what my granny and her siblings (and even “Papa Rat” himself) would want most -that his story would point to Jesus. I hope that’s what you see when you read about Sam McAdams in The Heart of the Mountains.

Have you ever read a book based on family history? One of my favorites is Catherine Marshall’s Christy.
